I am running kubuntu 11.04 on an ASUS K401J which also uses the VT1708S Analog soundcard.
My problems are the same as the parent post. When headphones are plugged in all sound is muted. Un-muting the sound in kmix causes the un-muting of internal speakers as well as headphones. I have a dual-boot setup with Ubuntu 10.04 running that has similar problems with the sound as well, however after much tweaking, I have managed to partially fix the bug where sound will still play on the internal speakers even if the headphones are attached before booting into Ubuntu - but pulling out and plugging in the headphone jack mutes the internal speakers without muting the headphones.
