Same for some other upgrades (most from 10.10, one from 9.04): upgrading grub fails if the device has an unconventional name. It is fixed for /dev/sd*, /dev/hd* and /dev/vd*, but not for /dev/* The update script does only accept some devices as boot devices, but not any combination allowed by the file system. As soon as there are uncommon device names, the routine will fail, leaving the user with an upgraded grub, but a non booting system!
Workaround: do not select "boot automatically" after upgrading, then install-grub /dev/your_uncommon_boot_device_name for sure recreate grub.cfg: update-grub then reboot: reboot At least for me it was fine, to have a rescue cd at hand with grub installed on it. In most cases I could start the system this way, then repair grub to make it boot again! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/754563 Title: After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 system doesn't start -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
