I just tested the R program again and it correctly failed to allocate memory when running without swap. It seems that what I saw was just the system busy swapping out to disk to free up memory when it had swap enabled. That one application can effectively DoS every other by causing memory pressure is the real problem here. I'll be moving to natty and can test if that kernel has improved in this regard. Is there anything else I should test?
