Very interesting. Could you test with v2.6.38.2-natty (the upstream
kernel which the Natty release kernel 2.6.38-8.42-generic is based on)
and the new ubuntu kernel from the -proposed upgrades
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed) which is think should
now be based on upstream stable 2.6.38.4.

An aside on kernel numbering:
There are two different numbering schemes involved here, one being the
naming scheme you see upstream on kernel.org:
The kernels from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
are directly based on kernels as taken from
http://kernel.org/
compiled for e.g. natty:

The timeline is:
first the kernels based on the "mainline" (see kernel.org) tree
(maintained by Linus Torvalds):
v2.6.38-rc1-natty
..
v2.6.38-rc8-natty
v2.6.38-natty (based on the release of the 2.6.38 kernel; the mainline
tree then moved on to 2.6.39-rc1)
then the kernels based on the "stable" (again see kernel.org) tree
(maintained by Greg Kroah-Hartman):
v2.6.38.1-natty
v2.6.38.5-natty

So you don't see 2.6.38.6 or 2.6.38.7 because currently on kernel.org
the latest stable is 2.6.38.5.

The other numbering scheme is for ubuntu kernels (as opposed to
upstream kernels).
I'm a bit unclear on how one gets from the ubuntu kernel numbers to
the underlying upstream kernel numbers, but I just saw that in your
bug report is written:
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2
and 2.6.38.2 is the upstream stable kernel that the Natty release
kernel is based on.
