I tried my own suggestions this evening and installed Ubuntu 11.04. Specifying sound card model "dell-vostro" did not help at all, neither did trying one of the other ones as well. Strangely, there where no changes in available options in alsamixer too.
When I did the same thing in OpenSUSE 11.4 - changing the model gave me different options in alsamixer and specifying "dell-vostro" gave me working jack plug sensing.
