I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 about ten days ago. One or two days
later, Ubuntu started freezing randomly. The time between each freeze
varies, it can be as little as a few minutes or as much as almost a day,
typically one or a few hours. When it happens, everything freezes, I
can't use the keyboard or the mouse, and the last second (or so) of
sound that was played starts looping indefinitely. The CPU and GPU
temperatures aren't particularly high (around 50-55 degrees Celcius).
All memory has as far as I can tell not been used up when it happens
(I've had htop running when it has freezed, and nothing strange seems to
happen with the memory). Also, I've tried using up almost all memory,
that doesn't make it freeze. Also, it never freezes when I run OSX (I've
tried to make it freeze without success), which is installed on the same
hard drive.
First I suspected Transmission might be the cause since it always
happened when Transmission was running, but then it started to happen
even when Transmission wasn't running, so it's at least not Transmission
per se. It's still seems to be happening more frequently when
Transmission is running though (I haven't checked if this also is the
case with other bittorrent clients), but only if Transmission is
actually downloading. I use full disk encryption (the one included in
the alternate install), but that has never caused any problems before.
