Public bug reported:
After installing Ubuntu 10.10 my laptop overheats, sometimes getting to
the point of the system locking up. When booting to Windows 7 it does
not overheat. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545. Symptoms include 1) a
very hot mouse touchpad and keyboard. 2) fan running continually 3)
system eventually stops working.
Since this problem could cause hardware damage I think this should be a
high priority bug. The goals would be 1) installing from CD using
defaults does not cause laptops to overheat 2) for existing installs,
something along the lines of `apt-get update && apt-get upgrade` fixes
the problem.
I suspect the problem could be as simple as the fan not running at a
high enough speed so the system just keeps getting hotter and hotter.
Although this was a fresh install, I previously ran 10.04 on the same
laptop and did not have these problems.
Search results on Google show this as a common problem for several
brands of laptops running Ubuntu 10.10, but I could not find a
definitive solution. In any case, since it could cause hardware damage,
post install tweaks to fix it are sub optimal.
