I also experienced this with my Toshiba A100-TA7 with  Ubuntu 7.04
(final release)

With Edgy, I never experienced any problems with sound. Whether I
rebooted/suspended or not, it always worked.

echo "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
and a reboot fixed the problem for me.
