Thank you for reporting this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. I don't know what happened, but from your description it sounds likely that your firewall tightened some directory permissions when you ran it. I can understand why this might be frustrating, but it doesn't sound like a Transmission bug, or even a Firestarter bug.
