Hi.  Thanks for the quick reply, sorry for the slightly delayed reply
(I'm running off the live cd and have to reset evolution/pop/smtp every
time I reboot and want to send mail).  My /boot/grub/menu.lst was empty
(there was no grub directory).  
My fstab:
