This bugs affects me as well on my Dell latitude e4310 laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. The freezes usually occur when removing the laptop from the docking station (where it is connected to an external monitor via DVI) and when libnotify popups are shown (which seems to be another libnotify bug). The GPU is Intel.
