Completed uninstalled and removed the following:
nvidia-common 0.2.30
nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubunutu1
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20110107+b795ca6e-0ubuntu7
xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:2.1.17-3ubuntu7

Restarted in recovery mode and dropped into terminal mode with networking.  
Ran telinit 3.  
Logged in and switched to the directory containing the latest commercial NVidia 
driver: 256.53
> sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run -uninstall results in no driver installed 
> so fine.
> sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run complained about nouveau hence why I 
> installed that.  Afterwards it seemed to work until it failed to build the 
> kernel module.
