Heureka, it's working now. Even with the troublesome fglrx, one has just
to unload it via /etc/default/acpi-support.... There are some
interesting error messages though:

during suspend:

[ 1724.529358] ohci1394 0000:00:08.0: freeze
[ 1724.529363] ohci1394 does not fully support suspend and resume yet
[ 1724.529369] ieee1394: hpsb_bus_reset called while bus reset already in
progress

and during resume:

[ 49.776290] ACPI Error (dsopcode-0481): Attempt to CreateField of length
zero [20060707]
[ 49.776303] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed
[\_SB_.PCI0.IDEC.RATA] (Node ffff81001e700570), AE_AML_OPERAND_VALUE
[ 49.776371] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed
[\_SB_.PCI0.IDEC.CHN1.DRV0._GTF] (Node ffff81001e700790), AE_AML_OPERAND_VALUE
[ 49.776438] do_drive_get_GTF: Run _GTF error: status = 0x3006

This S4 cycle was tried after two consecutive S3 cycles.
