Daniel T Chen, thanks for your reply. I included the results of three different tests as the problem appears to be the same for all three. I will continue the discussion with the creative vibra128...
1) I tried oss capture with no difference to the results. 2) Not sure what you mean by 'see above' 3) The default sound card is AudioPCI. Device manager lists it as Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI, which I thought may have been wrong, but upon further investigation I discovered that the creative vibra128 uses the Ensoniq ES1371 AudioPCI chip, so it would seem the driver is correct.
