I'm using DisplayPort daily on my ThinkPad T510 with a Dell 24" display. There are occasional quirks, especially when the system tries to do power-saving on the external display or I adjust the relative vertical position of the screens, but things mostly come up and stay up if I configure the display setup as the "default" (for login) from the monitors control panel and reboot.
