SOLVED-this solution worked for me:sound stopped working ubuntu 10.04 en1370-I
added this:
(options snd-hda-intel model=generic) I had previously added: (options
snd-hda-intel model=auto) with no results.

"options snd-hda-intel model=auto
or
options snd-hda-intel model=generic
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
reboot to test in between. Also you may want to run:
alsamixer
and ensure all levels are cranked and unmuted."
