I have managed to get more details by taking a video of the bootup with
boot_delay=2000. The first few lines are typed out below:

Do you need more?

Perhaps I should mention that this is a regression. I am still able to
use the machine with the maverick 2.6.35 kernel. The machine is a laptop
with an uncommon board. It only has one CPU. I've tried booting with
nohz=off highres=off nolapic noapic and noacpi. I'm going to try booting
with nosmp, and then I'm going to sleep. If this is the last message
tonight, assume that didn't work either...
