Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compizconfig-settings-manager

NOTE: Following information is obtained using a fresh Ubuntu 11.04
installation with "Ubuntu Classic" login. I strongly believe, however,
I did not test it since I do not like Unity (yet?), that same thing is
true for "Ubuntu" login with Unity desktop.

compiz ...

When ccsm is used to enable "Desktop Cube" or other options related to
Cubes (e.g. 3D Windows, Rotate, ...) the decoration of windows is
removed and the desktops windows are left uncontrollable.

Selecting a working profile (Preferences -> import) under ccsm and
resetting compiz (Compiz fusion icon - Package fusion-icon did help
during my analysis session here) brings the desktop in a situation where
at least logout/login helps (sometimes it is not even needed).

Patching a compiz profile manually (see below), shows a working desktop
with all manually/textually inserted items. This implies that the real
problem is in the cooperation between ccsm and compiz (maybe introduced
by new modules around Unity - but that's a wild guess).

The profile can be edited using the following strategy (using ccsm and an
editor):
* Preferences -> Profile Export -> save no-cube.profile
* Editor:
change s0_active_plugins = ...;wall;...
with      s0_active_plugins = ...;cube;...
* Save as cube.profile
* Preferences-> Profile Import -> cube.profile

NOTE: like "cube", also other modules like "rotate;cubeaddon;td" can be added
in the same way.
My profile has:
[core]
s0_active_plugins =
core;bailer;detection;composite;opengl;compiztoolbox;copytex;decor;grid;titleinfo;gnomecompat;regex;imgpng;mousepoll;annotate;screenshot;clone;vpswitch;place;animation;move;resize;shift;mag;cube;gears;rotate;cubeaddon;td;resizeinfo;session;workarounds;thumbnail;wobbly;expo;ezoom;staticswitcher;fade;scale;
s0_hsize = 6
s0_vsize = 1
