Me TV has streams and shows 0: eng (MPEG 4).

however, I hope this was that okay?
You do need to change channels i.e. restart the player to get the new settings
applied.
actually stop Me TV running, what's the best way to do this without
re-booting?
File->Quit or `killall me-tv` from the command line.

Haha :) Yes, that's not real helpful but I think that you just need to say
"gui.audio_mixer_method:Software" from memory. The later versions of Me TV use
libvlc as the default player so it's been some time since I've done this.
