Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

If MailMan has shunted messages in /var/lib/mailman/qfiles/shunt, do-
release-upgrade will fail when updating mailman, thus failing the entire
upgrade.

I didn't manage to capture the messages from the mailman update, they
stated one should retry the update when the shunt directory is empty.
The messages output by dpkg* are:

Preparing to replace mailman 1:2.1.8-2ubuntu2 (using
.../mailman_1%3a2.1.9-4ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...
Shutting down Mailman's master qrunner
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/mailman_1%3a2.1.9-4ubuntu1_amd64.deb (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
No updates are necessary.
Starting Mailman's master qrunner.
[...]
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/mailman_1%3a2.1.9-4ubuntu1_amd64.deb

Could not install the upgrades
The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery
will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the
files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.
E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I'm afraid the logs in /var/log/dist-upgrade have also been lost, because as
soon as the upgrade was aborted, I restarted the process (after hacking
/etc/lsb-release and /etc/apt/sources.list to refer to edgy), now with an empty
shunt dir.
