Okay, one final comment on my issue. As it turns out, lock the screen before closing the lid or not, it will most likely freeze the screen once the screen is blanked or suspends. With blanking, there seems to be a time issue: the longer the lid is closed, the more likely the screen will freeze. I guess I'll try turning off the screensaver all together.
