I think this may have something to do with gnome-wm.

My .xsession-errors is continuously being written to (it's now 853M in
size) with:

Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0" already has a window
manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window
manager.

and gnome-wm seems to keep being respawned:

paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
4109
paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
4142
paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
4252
paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
paulm@noobuntu:~$ pgrep gnome-wm
4330

Executing:
killall gnome-wm

seems to have stopped the respawning and now gconfd is not causing
noticable IO
