I had a very similar problem. All notifications worked and the process
was on.
In gconf-editor: "apps/gwibber/preferences " I removed the keys:
streams
window_position
window_size
window_splitter
And then i could start it.
Im running ubuntu 11.04, and gnome 2....
This was after trying to remove the program in synaptic and removing the
configfiles in ("username"/.config/gwibber/)
