I experienced a similar bug which probably has the same cause. After booting and logging in the wallpaper did not show up. The background remained black. When I tried to open the wallpaper file in image viewer I received the error message "Schwerer Fehler beim Lesen einer PNG-Bilddatei: IDAT: CRC error", which means in English "Fatal error opening PNG image file: IDAT: CRC error". I'm using Linux Mint 9 Isadora.
