broken drive firmware caused initial problem. Broken installer puting grub on a random drive remains as a bug that needs to be fixed. If the installer notices that there is more than one grub installed, or if the grub it finds is not on the disk it has been told to install on, IT SHOULD ASK THE USER WHERE HE WANTS GRUB INSTALLED! not randomly choose a drive to install grub on.
