Confirmed, it also happens using spanish.

Update Manager's window has a minimum width (can't resize it any smaller
than that). For this minimum size, the english string fits correctly.
However, at this size, strings in other languages might be longer than
the width of the window. However, the window doesn't resize to
accomodate elements that are larger than this default size (in this
case, label_battery on image-apply, on UpdateManager.ui).

If the UpdateManager window is manually resized, it apparently remembers
this new size for subsequent runs. So if the window is resized so that
the string fits correctly, it will come up with that size when run
later.

An easy way to check this behavior is to install the language packs:

sudo apt-get install language-pack-fr language-pack-gnome-fr

then invoke update-manager like this (when a system is running under
battery of course):

LANG="fr_FR.UTF-8"  LANGUAGE=fr_FR  update-manager

** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Confirmed
