Hi, I had the same problem, but not with contacts while with the Gmail calendar. When I open the tab calendar it appear that it try to synchronize the data, and it stay this way for a long time. Also I noticed that the process /usr/lib/evolution/e-calendar-factory takes too many processor resources (about 99%-100%)
Killing the evolution solves the problem.
