Public bug reported:
I feel that single user mode in Ubuntu is either poorly named or just
doesn't do the right stuff. There is FAR too much started in runlevel S:
* netwokring. How can a system be "single user" when you have a network
interface up?
* ipsec
* portmap (if nfs-utils is installed)
* pppd
* pcmciautils - I don't plan to use my pc card slots while in single user mode.
* X11-common
* udev. It loads all kinds of stuff via hotplug events, i.e. your network
interfaces. I don't want my wireless adapter up when I'm trying to do system
maintenance.
Single user mode should be locked down so that only one console is
opened and there is no other means of accessing the system. This is
intended for extreme situations since there is no password required to
get here. If you want all this stuff to open in some optional runlevel
I'd think it would be better to have a runlevel 3 with all the normal
everything except X.
