I just had the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10 - all emails but one were gone from my Inbox. Quite a disturbing experience ...
Luckily, the solution that Joost suggested worked for me. Thanks a lot, Joost! I heard various complaints before but the fact that such a critical bug has been around since 2009 clearly proves to me that the evolution project is indeed defunct.
