I had removed beryl and compiz a few weeks ago before upgrading. I reinstalled through Synaptic yesterday and Metacity is running again and my desktop has returned to its previous status. It is worth noting that my system had hung a few times during the upgrade from the screen saver kicking on and it frequently hangs this laptop when doing so. After restart I had to revert to 6.10 and then up to Feisty again per the Update Manager.
locate did not find a .gnomerc I am unsure of which gnome-compiz-manager might be used. However, the problem seems resolved for me now.
