On Ubuntu Lucid (recent upgrade from hardy preinstalled on a Dell 1525
inspiron):
When typing a string in Synaptic quick search, such as "gcc" or some
other well known package, absolutely nothing happens. Pressing enter
after entering the string does nothing either. It doesn't work even if
you enter currently displayed packages that appear when you first open
Synaptic. For example, in the quick search box, type 2vcard, 3dchess,
or whatever, nothing.
Other posts suggest running:
sudo update-apt-xapian-index
When I do that, I get:

Please reopen. Just because the original poster could not describe the
problem adequately does not mean the problem exits. It surely does!
If you need more info, please ask and I will do what I can to help.
