I also have this issue on Natty AMD64. It does not seem to be related to the driver because I actually recently upgraded from an Nvidia 9600GT (using that binary driver) to a Radeon 6870 (using the catalyst binary driver.) Problem happened under both sides. Disabling Maximize Effect is an acceptable workaround but a bit of a bummer.
