Over a month after the official release, and since the problem keeps up, I decided before my pc burns completely, to switch back to maverick, at least untill oneiric. Before doing so, I gave a try to third party repositories (ubuntu-x-swat/xorg-edgers) to check the updated versions of xorg, ati drivers etc but the problem continued. I'll have to report also that until now I've never before tested the open source ATI drivers on a previous ubuntu version since it didn't support 3D! So it might be a problem of the opensource ATI driver. I also tested via 3rd party repos the 2.6.39 kernel and the problem seems to continue. And since Fedora 15 seems also to overheat (gave a try), I suppose it is a general kernel or os driver problem. Thank you for your time.
