Recently I installed Ubuntu 7.04 and encountered the same problem that I
saw in other Linux Distro's. It is clear for me by now that all  last
version of Linux ( Ubuntu 6.10 & 7.04, Suse 10, 10.1, 10.2, SLED Debian,
Knoppix. Mandrva 2007.) that I tested, they have problem with HW sound
82801G INTEL HDA card in my TOSHIBA SATELLIATE INTEL CENTRINO DUO.

I found in kernel-log some discrepancy that could be a cause of this 
dysfunction:
