The problem here is one of complexity. The simple presence of gconf key suggesting that a window manager is configured to use sloppy focus doesn't actually mean that a) the user is using that window manager, b) the user is even using gconf. I am not interested in attempting to detect all of the above things, so I think we have no real choice here but to stick to a safe default, unfortunately!
