I installed it as we would any other package, and uninstalled it the
usual way as well.

This happened first when I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, and *no* other
package has ever required "purging files" to upgrade it. Any merge
conflicts would normally be clearly noted. Is there a special, unwritten
procedure for upgrading 10.10 to 11.04 when it comes specifically to
samba4?

This problem doesn't exist in 10.10.
