Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon
bugs: - displaying dialog boxes that do not identify the program issuing them - displaying multiple copies of the same dialog - dialogs will not go away when you click close or the "x" icon. It isn't just that there are other copies hiding underneath; if you move them they still don't go away. - dialog text will not cut and paste - had to use kill -9 rather than kill to get rid of gnome-settings-daemon This isn't about the error occurring, it is about badly mishandling the dialogs. circumstances involved replugging keyboard, a full disk, and dbus failing due to full disk. unplugged and reconnected keyboard and gnome-settings-daemon displayed a large number of windows, which would not go away, with the following message (and failing to identify as gnome-settings-daemon - I had to run xprop to identify the program displaying window): Error activating XKB configuration It can happen under various circumstances - a bug in libxklavier library - a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmod, xmodmap utilities) - X server with incompatable libxkbfile implementation X server version data: The X.Org Foundation 11001000 If you report this situation as a bug, please include: - the result of xprop -root | grep XKB - the result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd Window was not cut and pastable kill -i on gnome-settings-daemon, then restarted. Until restarted screen/window appearance changed. ubuntu-bug failed with dbus error message, started working after fixing disk space. Volume filesystem root has zero disk space remaining. Clicking examine pulled up disk usage analyzer (slow) 845.2GB in /tmp. wireshark was using 800+GB (for some reason failed to stop recording USB Video Class data). unplugging/replugging keyboard again didn't bring up the message again so the lack of disk space was probably the cause. xprop -root | grep XKB CUT_BUFFER5(STRING) = (deleted) CUT_BUFFER4(STRING) = "xprop -root | grep XKB" CUT_BUFFER3(STRING) = "xprop -root | grep XKB" CUT_BUFFER2(STRING) = "xprop -root | grep XKB" CUT_BUFFER1(STRING) = "xprop -root | grep XKB" CUT_BUFFER0(STRING) = "xprop -root | grep XKB" _XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "evdev", "pc105", "us", "", "" _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "evdev", "pc105", "us", "", "" gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd options = [Compose key compose:lwin] model = layouts = [] Bus 005 Device 002: ID 0518:0001 EzKEY Corp.
