Public bug reported:

After the grub boot menu time-out my system often locks up with a variety of
messages or just a blank screen.
Sometimes boot up is successful, and the system is reasonably stable, but there
are some signs of instability such as occasional lock-ups.
I've lived with the problem for several ubuntu releases. I've changed the disk
but the problem persists.
