** Description changed:

This is in Natty. This is one of a number of issues with this laptop,
but there is no convenient way to aggregate due to lack of a laptop
compatibility database. The others I've filed are bug #791898 and bug
#791900. I've also commented in bug #771716 which this laptop also
  suffers from.

I've been fiddling around with setting various models from
  /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz without much
success. It doesn't show up, unsurprisingly, in alsamixer, and
attempting to force a profile with a mic in pavucontrol was also
  expectedly unsuccessful.
