Well, I tried running 173 and it failed just like the others (black
screen at boot).

In case anyone stumbles upon this thread that is looking for a fix for
this driver, there seems to be a dozen different ways to do it. The
easiest way seems to be this method:

Reboot Computer, hold down shift key until you reach Grub menu.
Select Recovery Mode from that menu.
Ubuntu 11.4 (Natty) will then alert you that Unity will not work with the 
drivers you have installed and will then launch Classic.
>From the Classic toolbar up top, merely rerun the driver app and remove 173.
Then select the other version(s) of the driver that was working for you 
previously.

I hope they fix this bug for Natty soon, I really want to use the
capabilities of my video card soon.
