I decided to give the latest Pre-released updates a try and voila it worked. Fixed everything. Synaptic Package Manager: Settings -> Repositories -> Updates -> checked Pre-released updates (natty proposed). Reloaded the packages, marked and applied all upgrades. Hail Mary.
I'm running the NVidia drivers supplied with the ubuntu distribution.
