Interesting, it appears xauth is trying to write into
/var/run/lightdm/authority/, which does not have write permissions for
non root (for obvious reasons). So this might be seen as a bug in
xauth. See bug 685194 for the request to be able to use ~/.Xauthority
as an authority file which would bypass this issue.
