I don't think I was doing anything unusual. I was just installing the
updates as they become available. A possible stumbling block could be
that these updates are being done on a System76 Lemur laptop which I
purchased several years ago. I do know (now) that they have some special
driver software which is not up to date with the latest linux versions.
