I discovered my system's problem and it may be the same as yours. The Ubuntu 11.04 kernel loaded the wrong driver for my NIC. It loads r8169 but it should load r8168. I found the correct driver at the Realtek Taiwan site, installed it, blacklisted r8169, and now my connection is stable.
