I tried the java-6-openjdk out and it is very sluggish in all aspects
that I tried. Opening a table is slow and the bigger the table, the
slower it is. I set it back to the jre1.6.0_22 that I had installed and
it was snappy again, very quick.

In the Java options I find two by Sun. They look nearly the same:

v 1.6.0_22 with accessibility in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre - this
is the slow one

same version number, but nothing about accessibility in
/usr/lib/jvm/jre1.6.0_22

The second one is the one I installed back in December using jre-
6u22-linux-i586.bin
