Thanks again and sorry for being late with this reply.

I think nothing useful has come out:

~$ nm-tool

NetworkManager Tool

State: disconnected

print_devices(): didn't get a reply from NetworkManager.
There are no available network devices.

~$ sudo NetworkManager --no-daemon --enable-test-devices
NetworkManager: <information>   starting...
NetworkManager: <information> Updating allowed wireless network lists.
NetworkManager: <WARNING>        nm_dbus_get_networks_cb (): error received:
org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks - There are no wireless networks
stored..
NetworkManager: <information>   Going to sleep.
NetworkManager: <information> Waking up from sleep.

Every time I change something in network settings through
System-->Administration-->Network I get a "Going to sleep./Waking up
from sleep." couple of messages but nothing changes: if roaming mode is
enabled (i.e. if eth0 is managed by NetworkManager and
/etc/network/interfaces is cleaned of any entry about eth0) my network
connection stops working and NetworkManager keeps saying that it can't
see any network.

When NetworkManager is on, lshw says the ethernet interface is DISABLED:

~$ sudo lshw
[CUT]
  *-network DISABLED
       description: Ethernet interface
       physical id: 1
       logical name: eth0
       serial: 00:20:18:b0:1d:f0
       capabilities: ethernet physical
       configuration: broadcast=yes multicast=yes

Weird, isnt' it?
