"sudo unity restart" won't work, because Unity isn't a sysvinit service
or something. If you want to restart unity, run unity --replace OR unity
--reset (use the latter to revert to default Unity and Compiz settings).

As for sudo service gdm restart, why doesn't it work? It would work only
in a terminal, because sudo needs an stdin input pipe so that you could
enter the password. It won't work inside Unity Alt+F2.

I'm closing these bugs, since these aren't related to Unity.
