The packages alsa-base and alsa-utils are not upgrading correctly. They
are both listed in device manager. Here is the error message I got in
Device Manager:

There is no /etc/alsa directory. There is a file named alsa in /etc. On my
system alsa-base is located in /etc/modprobe.d and alas-utils is in
/etc/init.d.
I have cleared the cache twice and have change repositories twice but
still get the same errors. I've posted at ubuntuforum.org but no one
there seems to have any ides.
The sound system worked fine in Edgy but now has crackling issues on
playback in Audacity. I don't know if installing these upgrades will
solve that but I don't feel I can troubleshoot this issue until I
install these upgrades.
