You should push the gnome-shell patch to debian directly as I told in my 
previous message. We won't diverge from debian for that change (and so, until 
then, there is no need to integrate other patches until that). The good news is 
that we have a wiki page explaning how to do that! Here is the link:

Do not hesitate to link debian bugs (for at least gnome-shell and maybe 
gnome-session?) to that one. If you need any help, I'm available on 
#ubuntu-desktop on IRC (freenode) starting next week.
