No, adhoc connections can fail. For instance, not all wireless devices
supporting sending the IBSS beacons necessary to advertise adhoc
networks. The fact that the icon shows as "connecting" forever is
probably an indication that this is the case. Regardless, the network
should remain in some form of connecting state until something connects
to the "server"... Or it's just that it's not getting the answer from
the supplicant that the connection has been established, which could
also be the case. Please try to connect another device to the created
ad-hoc network, or if all else fails try lowering security requirements
to see if connections can then be established (some devices tend to not
like WPA with ad-hoc for some reason).
